Company wide provision of engineering and operational support to maintain and improve the continuous operational availability of data centres and delivery on new projects, in order to minimise (business critical) downtime. Research, design, calculate, review efficiency of technical improvements; project support for data center design and construction works and training of local data center staff in countries in which icolo operates. Technical and operational auditing and testing of the data center and data center staff. Development and maintenance of best practice standards and know-how.


As an acknowledged expert operating from Nairobi gives advice and supports the company in order to build and maintain outstanding data centers, in terms of stability (minimise downtime) energy efficiency, cost effectiveness, security, rapid project roll out and state of the art design.


The right candidate has 20 Years of work experience in engineering with a minimum of 7 to 10 years of Data Centre design and construction experience.


Responsibilities


Responsibility: Design and Construction Support (80%)


Tasks:                 


  • Responsible for developing designs of reliable power systems, data center systems and/or cooling systems as applicable to his field of expertise. Design from Scope to Implementation
  • Supports with preparing data center facility design briefs
  • Responsible for reviewing contract documents, e.g. construction contracts, drawings, studies, method statements, commissioning manual and procedures.
  • Able to participate in technical change management, e.g. review detailed method statements prepared by local operations staff and recommend improvements.
  • Provide commissioning support to junior staff
  • Responsible for investigation, analysis and identification of the root cause of technical incidents 
  • Support projects team
  • Reviews, comments and approves on key documents, e.g. equipment specifications, engineering calculations, equipment settings, commissioning plan and commissioning scripts
  • Participates in engineering meetings and construction site inspections
  • Participates in Integrated Site Acceptance Test (ISAT)


Responsibility: Maintenance / troubleshooting support of data centers (10%)


Tasks:

                        

Regularly review operations and provide training within the data center


  • Reviews existing engineering, functional descriptions and equipment data specifications as required, write an test MOPS and repair maintenance procedures
  • Undertakes technical auditing/monitoring of systems to ensure operational best practice and technical competencies are compiled with and to identify potential risks for business continuity
  • Develops and maintains auditing guidelines, participate in ISO and PCI review and auditing, as well as External audits
  • On the Job (OJT) and General training as a follow up of audits


Equipment maintenance in data center


  • (Senior) Operates on managerial level in crisis situations with significant business impact, takes the lead of data center operations in order to control and solve technical and operational problems
  • Adheres to crisis resolution guidelines, elevating data center issues to the correct management level as appropriate
  • Investigates/troubleshoots technical incidents, reports findings and recommendations to local operations staff, evaluates possible impact on other data centers and disseminates experience


Change management


  • Reviews change requests and method statements for approval by Head of Operations to ensure integrity of data center installations and to prevent business risk to customers
  • When major changes in the data center are contemplated, prepares analysis of the current situation and the potential impact of the change on business continuity
  • If required provides detailed guidelines to the local operations team on implementing the change
  • Provides functional guidance to local operational staff during changes that have large business impact


Provision of sales support


  • Develops technical solutions, as a technical expert, to meet customer requirements


Responsibility: Research and development (5%) 


Tasks:


Undertake research and provides high level designs for new data centers


  • Assesses potential data center locations and provides expert advice on the suitability of a location proposed for the development into a data center
  • Delivers high-level data center single-line diagrams and floor layouts, in line with the latest developments in sector
  • Prepares and updates capacity plannings
  • Leads research in new technologies and processes as member of key development projects
  • Undertakes reliability studies to identify and address electrical design issues that could make data centers vulnerable to business interruption


Responsibility: Data center costing support (2.5%)


Tasks:


  • Participate in preparation of CAPEX budget for data center expansion, upgrades and new builds
  • Undertakes detailed inspection of new locations and identifies scope of work for data center projects


Responsibility: Review and update Design and Engineering Requirements (DER)


Tasks:


  • Periodically reviews and updates information to DTEG as needed in order to contribute to DER in response to field experience and technical development.


Responsibility: Energy efficiency per data center (2.5%)


Tasks:


Ensure data center operates with maximum efficiency


  • Delivers on PUE (Power Usage Efficiency) improvement program, taking into consideration efficiency and cost-savings, without compromising on safety and reliability within data centers
  • Undertake research to maximise data center ‘uptime’ and provides recommendations
  • Prepares analyses and executes complex engineering projects within specified deadlines, budget and quality guidelines


Responsibility: Additional duties and responsibilities


  • Assumes other special projects/assignments as directed by the CEO, COO and/or Head of Operations
  • Willing to travel, must have passport.


Essential Knowledge


General

  • Competent in the use of Microsoft Office computer applications including Project, AutoCad / Revit / BIM 360 / Teams and able to master other computer applications in use by icolo.io
  • Knowledge of commissioning practices

Mechanical Engineering

  • Work experience in a professional data engineering consulting practice a benefit.
